Tony Goldfinch – Chief Executive
Tony (widely known as “Goldie”) joined The Lion Foundation in September 2007. He was previously a Regional Sales Manager for Lion Nathan (based in Wellington), and prior to that was a Surveyor and Rivers Engineer. Tony was born in Napier and has lived most of his life in the Hawkes Bay, where he still lives with his wife and two children.
Rachael Dent – Organisational Performance Manager
Rachael joined The Lion Foundation in April 2010 having held a number of management positions, most recently within the Auckland Council in Building/Asset Management. Rachael has a Diploma in General & Applied Psychology and a Graduate Diploma in Business Studies with an HR endorsement. Rachael’s role as Organisational Performance Manager aims to enhance the organisation’s greatest asset, our people. Rachael is married with three children and proudly represents West Auckland.
Sam Alexander – Compliance Manager
Sam emigrated to New Zealand from South Africa with her husband and son in 2008. She holds two legal degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand – B.Proc and LLB – as well as a Diploma in Corporate Law and was admitted as an Attorney and Conveyancer of the High Court of South Africa, and managed her own private practice for over ten years. Sam joined The Lion Foundation in February 2019 after a number of years at the New Zealand Maritime Museum in Auckland, most recently as the Head of Operations and Finance. In 2016, Sam was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court in New Zealand.
Rob Cooney – Senior Finance Manager
Originally from the Waikato region, Rob is a chartered accountant with 11+ years of corporate finance, accounting and management experience, most recently as a Finance & Commercial Director with Intrepid Group, based in North America. Rob joined The Lion Foundation in January 2020 and his role is to oversee all aspects of the organisation’s financial obligations.
Philip Steele – National Operations Manager
Born and raised in Hamilton, Philip moved to the UK in 1993 where he worked in the hospitality industry for a number of years managing pubs and taverns throughout London and Kent. Philip joined The Lion Foundation in 2002, and was initially based in Wellington managing the relationships with venue operators in the lower North Island regions, before taking a position in the Bay of Plenty in 2011. In 2015, Philip was appointed as the Northern Regional Manager overseeing Taupo north. Philip is now overseeing the organisation’s operational activities across the whole country. Phil is married with two young boys.
Tom Smith – Grants Manager
Originally from the UK Tom emigrated to NZ in 2018 with his young family. He has been involved with disability and Para Sport since 2007, working on the 2012 Paralympics then with Special Olympics Great Britain, Sport England and The England and Wales Cricket Board. Tom has extensive experience working in the philanthropic sector and started in the role of Grants Manager at The Lion Foundation in November 2019.
