KIWI CAN BRIDGING THE GAP
It seemed like a leap of faith to include the special needs classes when the Foundation for Youth Development’s Kiwi Can Programme was introduced at Crawshaw School in Hamilton. But thanks to a generous donation from The Lion Foundation, Kiwi Can has helped bridge the gap to the rest of the school community. This decile one school has two special needs satellite classes and including these kids with the rest of the school community, has been hugely successful.
Unsure how the programme would be understood, Kiwi Can Leader Rosie Dixon can now comment on its success: “With Kiwi Can, every student is being taught the same values. For term one, the lessons focussed on respect and it was very rewarding to see students in the playground sharing Kiwi Can sayings and including children from the satellite classes.”
Now helping all Crawshaw kids, including those with special needs, to lead a fulfilling life is not such a stretch.
