Teenagers are notorious for being uncommunicative. So Youthline Palmerston North has found the perfect way to help them talk about their problems: texting. Since the team of four counsellors and 27 volunteers started this service, they’ve had an astonishing 10,000 or more texts a month. They won’t necessarily give advice by text, but they will put the teenager in touch with someone who can help them. Jagruti Patel of Youthline tells us; “Now that they don’t have to voice their problems or be face to face, they feel ok to disclose what’s going on in their lives”.
