RONGOMAI PRIMARY SCHOOL
Until recently, Rongomai Primary in Otara was not only desperately short of books, the students didn't have a single dictionary between them. So Principal Tina Voordouw applied to The Lion Foundation for a grant. We were happy to help with funding for dictionaries and books for everyone, which has resulted in a noticeable improvement in reading and spelling. "By the end of last year 60% of these kids were reading at or above their age, compared with 40% the year before," Tina reports. What's more, judging by the looks on their faces, the students are loving the opportunity to appreciably improve their scholastic capabilities.
