WHERE THE MONEY GOES
Community Gaming returns more to the player and more to local communities than all other forms of gambling.
By law, 37.12% of funds raised by Community Gaming Trusts like The Lion Foundation through gaming machines in bars and hotels, must be returned to the community. The Lion Foundation consistently delivers a higher proportion of funds to the community.
The return to the player from each wager must be between 78% and 92% - higher than Lotteries, Casinos and Racing/Sports Betting (the latter two being purely for commercial gain). This range is set by the Department of Internal Affairs who electronically monitor every single gaming machine in New Zealand. The Lion Foundation machines return on average 92% of funds wagered, back to the player.
For every $1 that a player wagers at a Lion Foundation Community Gaming Venue, on average:

Before we can return a single dollar to the community, we are required to give the Government over 30% of proceeds in GST, gambling duty and compliance costs.
The Lion Foundation has a broad based funding policy - we think it's the right approach. We broadly distribute funds to four areas as per the following guidelines:
- 30% to Community, which includes the Arts, Culture, Heritage and the Environment.
- 40% to Sport with all the life skills, qualities and values that it develops.
- 15% to health and well-being for Kiwis from their first dawn to last sunset.
- 15% to education to help develop our young people where the State is unable to support.
The Lion Foundation does not profit financially. New Zealand does. We profit by making a difference.
