PLUNKET GETS HELPING HAND TO KEEP KIWI FAMILIES STRONG
Our funding has been used to cover Centre expenses ranging from new toys for toy libraries to repairs and maintenance.
In some areas, the funding has also helped increase staff numbers. Counties Manukau is one such area and Area Manager Louise Troy says the two additional health workers appointed through the grant are already proving a big success with families in the area.
"One father, left on his own with a five-month-old son because his wife had been taken to hospital with suspected H1N1 (swine flu), rang worried about how to make formula," says Louise.
"Because we now have this extra support we were able to go around and talk with the dad, check that he was able to cope with everything and alleviate any concerns he may have had. Having the ability to do this in person is so important."
Plunket CEO Jenny Prince says Plunket Centres provide a gateway through which families receive support and information.
"I want to thank The Lion Foundation for recognising the important role these Centres play in assisting families to build strong relationships and supportive networks in their communities."

A $500,000 grant from The Lion Foundation has given Plunket's Family Centres a major helping hand in their commitment to supporting New Zealand families.
Our Chief Executive Phil Holden says it is important to know that the funds given to community organisations directly benefit local communities and local families.
"We want this funding and our support of Plunket to really help as many families in New Zealand as possible. Plunket is an organisation which works to make families stronger and that's critically important to the welfare of our country."
The grant will also help the Centres cover costs such as vehicle leases and office administration costs.
